What to take on a bus: a packing list for a comfortable trip
21 July 2026 · 4 min read
A bus trip can be genuinely comfortable — if you have a few of the right things in your carry-on. The list below has been tested over hundreds of hours on the road.
The bare essentials
- Water — half a litre or more, in a bottle with a cap.
- A power bank and cable: not every bus has sockets, and your maps and ticket live on your phone.
- Documents and money — in an inside pocket or a bag that stays with you at all times.
- Any medication you take regularly, plus basic painkillers.
For sleep and rest
- A neck pillow — underrated right up until your first overnight trip.
- A light sweater or scarf: the temperature on board can be unpredictable.
- Earplugs and an eye mask if you’re travelling at night.
Food for the road
Choose things that don’t melt, crumble or smell strongly: nuts, snack bars, firm fruit, sandwiches in a container. Finish that hot coffee in a paper cup before boarding — on a moving bus it’s a hazard for you and your neighbours alike.
Passing the time
Download films, podcasts or music in advance: mobile data on the highway tends to drop out at the most exciting moment. A book or e-reader never runs flat at all.
What to leave at home
- Strong-smelling food — your neighbours won’t appreciate it.
- Valuable or fragile items in the luggage hold — take them on board with you.
- Glass bottles: they don’t last long on the road.
